Eye Surgery and Your Latest Options

Out of all our 5 major senses, it is perhaps our eyes that are most important. It is the eyes that serve as a window to the outside world, which is why it is pertinent that we take good care of them.

Unfortunately, time and disease are probably man's greatest enemies and they can take a toll on one's vision as well.

Fortunately, however, eye surgery procedures have made massive progress over the last few years and it's not surprising to see more and more people opting for some of the newer eye surgery procedures to correct and improve both their ability to see as well as their appearance.

Here is a brief look at some of the latest options in eye surgery procedures:

For most people looking to correct their eyesight, Lasik eye surgery has been a boon. It is a type of refractive eye surgery and the name LASIK is actually an abbreviation for "Laser assisted In situ Keratomileusis." It involves a controlled and precise removal of the corneal tissue and reshaping the cornea to correct its focusing ability. The procedure itself is very short and can take anywhere between 20 to 50 seconds. Probably the best aspect of Lasik eye surgery is that people can expect to go home within half-hour of surgery and can resume normal life after a short recovery period of 3 to 5 days! Although the cost of Lasik surgery has steadily risen over the last few years due to its growing demand, the advantages still far outweigh the cost factor for most people.

Even though Lasik surgery is a proven technique, it is still an elective procedure and not medically necessary and therefore not all people maybe ideal candidates for the same. One of the most popular alternatives to LASIK is PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy which involves the use of laser to make changes to the exterior surface of the cornea as opposed to Lasik where changes are made inside the cornea. PRK surgery has proven highly beneficial for patients with low to moderate farsightedness or nearsightedness.

This procedure is diagnosed particularly to those with recurrent corneal erosion. However, it takes much longer to attain the desired result with PRK surgery because there is a much greater amount of tissue that needs to be healed.

Another new eye surgery technique to go in for especially when the patient is too nearsighted or farsighted to be helped by the Lasik procedure is Intraocular Lenses or IOLs. This method involves the insertion of a small lens behind the pupil and just in front of the existing natural lens of the eye. However IOLs are yet to be approved by the FDA but have a great potential to become popular once approved.

Apart from the above mentioned types of surgery, one of the most important surgeries is Cataract surgery which enjoys a high success rate of 98%. In this procedure, the lens which has been clouded due to cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial one.

Another type of Cataract surgery known a Phacoemulsification uses ultrasound to break-up the cataract. In Extracapsular surgery, which is yet another technique of removing the clouded lens, a longer incision is made on the side of the cornea and the core of the lens is removed in one piece and the remaining part of the lens is removed by suction. However, no matter what technique is used, cataract eye surgery patients still need to use prescription glasses unlike Lasik surgery.

Thus we can understand that no matter what the technique of surgery, doctors and physiologists continuously strive to better existing techniques or create newer efficient procedures to cure different types of eye maladies, so that we can live a more complete and fulfilling life.

Cosmetic Surgery - Are You a Candidate?

Each year, millions of Americans undergo cosmetic surgery in an attempt to look younger, thinner, and more attractive. Statistics show that nearly 4 out of every 10 adults in the United States have undergone some sort of procedure in order to improve their appearance, including non-surgical options such as Botox or chemical peels. In some cities, these enhancements are no dirty secret; having work done is as natural as shopping for new clothes or a trip to the hair colorist.

Without a doubt, cosmetic surgery has a number of benefits. In psychologically healthy adults with realistic expectations regarding how a procedure will improve appearance, it can give a much needed boost to a person's self-esteem. If a person's only complaint about their physical appearance is that he dislikes a bump in their nose, a large forehead, or extra fat around the hips and thighs that is stubbornly resistant to diet and exercise, undergoing surgery may offer a reward that outweighs the risk many times over.

For the most part, undergoing a cosmetic procedure is extremely safe, involve minimal side effects, and although recovery is not painless, it is relatively quick and discomfort is easily managed. It is not unusual for a patient to choose to spend her recovery time on vacation, not only giving her body a chance to heal, but offering a period of rest for the mind and spirit as well.

Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it is important for a patient to have both a physical and a psychological consultation with the surgeon. A client who has unrealistic expectations regarding how surgery might improve her appearance or her life is not likely to be satisfied with even a surgeon's best work. In some cases, a person's body image simply doesn't match up with the reality of his appearance, something that can't be cured by any amount of physical alteration. When a person doesn't see himself as he really is, nipping and tucking only enhances the problem, rather than treating it. A reputable plastic surgeon will almost always refuse to work on a client suffering from any body image disorder.

There's no magic test to assure that cosmetic surgery is the best option to end a person's dissatisfaction with some aspect of her personal appearance. However, when the feeling of discontent stems from an obvious physical flaw that can be easily addressed via a surgical procedure, the patient is often happy with the result. The goal of any procedure is to improve the client's appearance, self-image, and self-confidence. If a surgeon believes that can be accomplished with a little nip and tuck, he's likely to consider the patient a good candidate for surgery.

History of LASIK Eye Surgery - How it Came About

History of Lasik eye surgery relates to eye surgeries that involve incisions in the cornea which began as early as the later part of the 1890's but it was largely experimental during those times. The success of eye surgeries took place after fifty more years from the time it started.

During World War II, the Japanese began conducting experimental surgeries in correcting myopia among Asians. Back then, the procedure entailed a series of corneal incisions in order for flattening to be done. As the eye undergoes the healing process, the cornea becomes depressed thus, the refractive errors in patients is being corrected. Due to the many complications that arise and the general predictability, physicians abandoned this early technique.

In the early part of 1960's, Keratomileusis was relatively hard to perform and the outcomes were very unpredictable. Without the use of contemporary diagnostic tools, correction of defective vision was made through the process of trial and error. Several years later, experimentation and research in this field gave birth to a refined version called Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK).

The ALK method was implemented similar to that of Keratomileusis originally performed by Dr. Barraquer. The difference of this new procedure lies in the use of a microkeratome. This is the instrument employed in removing accurate amount of corneal tissue and doing away with the freezing, replacement, and reshaping components. In ALK, the microkeratome is used in incising a small flap in the cornea's surface and folding it back when the thin disc from corneal stoma is being removed. The diameter and thickness of the disc that has been taken away will dictate the alteration in the patient's refractive defect.

In spite of its relatively improved way in treating myopia as compared to the previous forms of refractive operations, ALK was still considered not a reliable procedure. Again this method was later on abandoned in lieu of the newly favored technique called Radial Keratotomy invented by the Russians.

The Advent of Refractive Surgery

During the second half of the 1960's a significant increase in popularity took place in the refractive procedures even when the success were still at a lower rate in comparison to the modern technology employed these days.

The fame gained by the field of refractive processes was largely due to the particular invention of Radial Keratotomy. The pioneering Russian Ophthalmologist named Fyodorov made a few modifications on Dr. Barraquer's method of Keratomileusis. He tried reshaping the cornea without even removing a single tissue. With the use of a scalpel, Fyodorov made a series of radial incisions up to about 90% in the cornea's thickness.

The incision's number varies depending on the gravity of the eye's refractive defect and the needed correction. When the eye heals, the cornea's center depresses and an effective change in refractive error happens. However, this method was still basically a manual process. In addition to that, the range of myopia and astigmatism that it could treat was very limited.

Era of Excimer Laser

In the 1970's diamond knives were used in radial keratotomy which resulted in the procedure becoming more popular. In 1973, Steven Trokel started testing the technology of excimer laser and its probable contribution in the field of refractive surgery. Its tremendous precision and ability to emit low heat attracted Dr. Trokel to make use of it. This led to the development of Photo Refractive Keratectomy which is still performed today as an alternative to LASIK.

The Reign of LASIK

It was in the 1990's that a surgical procedure that is accurate and without the discomfort of an exhausting recovery came in. LASIK was pioneered by the Greek doctor named Ioannis Pillikaris. The technique was able to synthesize both Keratomileusis and Photo Refractive Keratotomy. Treatment with LASIK was less abrasive and dramatically improved.

Currently, LASIK itself has undergone innovations for its improvement. With its general safety, accuracy, and efficacy makes it a more bankable procedure. Recent developments in this particular type of refractive surgery have been made and are now being utilized in treating errors in refraction.

Little known facts about Lasik eye surgery - Part II.

Can Lasik eye surgery fix extreme nearsightedness? I heard it can't fully repair the problem.

The solution that most people with extreme nearsightedness use is a phakic intraocular lens implant. Basically a lens is put inside the eye. That way you don't have to worry about the lens getting too thin as you age. The major risk with putting a lens inside the eye is infection. If infection occurs you could loose your sight. This has never happened in clinical studies but it is still a risk.

What are the most important factors to be a candidate of Lasik surgery?

The thickness, shape, and strength of your cornea are the most important factors. Above all the thickness of your cornea will be the determining factor.

What are the major side effects of Lasik eye surgery?

The most common side effect is dry eyes. It usually only lasts three to six months and can be treated with medicated eye drops or oral Bio Tears treatments. Dry eyes are more common in women then men and affects postmenopausal women more acutely then other women. The other side effects occur in vision at night with halos or glares of light. These are most common in cases of extreme correction and are becoming more rare with new Lasik technology.

How likely is it that I will need corrective or enhancing surgery later on?

Only ten percent of patients need enhancing surgery after their initial correction. This is determined within three to six months after the first surgery. As a rule of thumb, corrections are more common in those that had higher corrections to start with. With wave-based Lasik the one-time surgery rates are much higher.

Surgery, Korea - 3 errors related to travel abroad Cosmetic Surgery.

As the rates of travel for cosmetic surgery increase, so do the misconceptions that Korean plastic surgery is best performed abroad. But that's not always the case.

Here are three things to consider about traveling for your plastic surgery:

1. Surgeons in Korea are more qualified to do Asian cosmetic procedures.

The medical education here in the United States is globally regarded as the best in medical training. Surgical advances along with research in plastic surgery are still regarded as the best in the world. While it is true, surgeons in Korea have usually only operated on "Asian faces", quality over quantity should be the ultimate factor when choosing a plastic surgeon.

2. It will be cheaper to have the surgery done in Korea.

While fees for surgery maybe slightly lower in Korea, one must factor additional costs associated with traveling to a foreign country to have surgery. Airline tickets, hotel fees, and meals can easily push the cost of the surgery higher than prices here in the US. Additionally, the stress of traveling to a foreign country and the risks of potential complications are also inherent costs associated with having surgery in Asia.

3. I can fly into Asia and come back home soon after without any worries.

A major role in achieving optimal results is having close postoperative care with your surgeon. Having the ability to reach your surgeon and freely communicate your concerns is one of the most important things I recommend for a prospective patient.

If you've been considering going abroad for cosmetic surgery for any of these reasons, I highly suggest you consider other alternatives before making this decision.

Plastic Surgery - your candidate or not.

However, when the feeling of discontent stems from an obvious physical flaw that can be easily addressed via a surgical procedure, the patient is often happy With the aim of treatment is to improve their image and style of customer confidence if the doctor believes that it can be done with a little nip and tuck can take account of surgery for patients with good candidates.

LASIK Eye Surgery Side Effects Not Taken Seriously, Says Former FDA Regulator - ABC News2.flv

ABC News - Former FDA Regulator Says LASIK Side Effects Weren't Taken Seriously Enough "I wouldn't say it was pooh-poohed so much it was just sort of shoved aside as the kind of, we, we don't know what to do with that data," he said. "It's right there in the record. The agencies and the refractive surgeons, people know these problems occur and there doesn't seem to be a plan to handle some of the more difficult problems that are created." - Morris Waxler, Former FDA ophthalmic surgical devices branch chief "A number of patients who underwent LASIK, a procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea and thereby correct vision, say they now suffer from side effects such as starbursts, halos, glare double-vision and night blindness. In some cases the side effects go away within weeks or months of the surgery, but in other cases, they appear to be permanent. Some people experience them mildly, but others have them so bad they can't perform basic functions, such as driving, and some people have said they lost their jobs due to negative side effects from LASIK procedures."

Learning About Lasik- A Comprehensive Guide to Lasik Surgery Overview

A Comprehensive Guide to Lasik Surgery

Under your breath you are spewing forth language you hope no one ever hears. But it’s so doggone frustrating. You’ve just dropped your latest pair of eyeglasses in the paint tray!

It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t the third pair in almost as many months! Something has got to give. Your optometrist is a really nice guy but putting his kids through college isn’t part of your own life plan.

You tried contact lenses only to discover that you are not a candidate. Some people aren’t. They just can’t wear them. Chronic dry eye, working in the windy outdoors; the reasons are as varied as the people.

Once again the option of Lasik surgery is creeping into the back of your mind. Humph! Along with the thought comes the skepticism. Or, should we say the fear?

Overcoming Fear!

Of all the fears associated with Lasik the largest by far is the fear of pain. Heck, that’s probably true for the majority of people. Any other time in our lives we link pain and surgery with anesthesia.

Since Lasik is conducted while the patient is awake that is a genuine consideration. But it might surprise you to know that your surgeon insures that your procedure is pain free. How? We explain the entire process in Looking for Lasik, A Comprehensive Guide to Lasik Surgery.

Another fear is one of “going under the knife.” You’ll be surprised to learn of the many different options available that don’t necessarily require a scalpel. We give you all the options available and how to select a procedure tailored to your needs.

Not everyone is a candidate for Lasik. How do you know whether it is a viable option for you or a loved one?

We show you how to make that determination. For instance, do you know the age threshold for a potential Lasik patient? We tell you inside.

Wavefront or IntraLasik?

Which one is right for you? Maybe you didn’t even realize that there is a difference. Indeed you may never have never even heard of Wavefront or IntraLasik we give you the scoop on both of these.

You need to be familiar with all the procedures so you can speak with your surgeon intelligently at your diagnostic appointment. Speaking of surgeons how do you go about selecting one?

Interviewing your surgeon!

Yes, interview your surgeon! To further your odds of a favorable procedure you need to know how to interview your surgeon.
After all you are planning on having an expensive procedure not to mention turning your vision over to someone else. Why would you not interview someone as important as that?

The good news is that inside you’ll have an entire chapter devoted to helping you conduct that interview!
