The Making of a Surgeon Review
It grabbed my attention while I was looking for medical books. Being a medical student, I know the difficulty of getting personal details of the hard times an intern encounters. It's almost impossible to get an anecdote once they finish up and become a specialist (yes I know they may share one or two from time to time, but such numerous examples with details?) Dr. Nolen perfectly shares all his mistakes, his regrets, his experience and etc. A bit dated of course but you should stop to ask yourself, why such an old book like this (where the price of rent in New York were about 300$) is still in the hands of readers? I wished it was lengthier, couldn't put it down, flows smoothly, a good week read.

A triumph that should be read by all doctors - Fateh Bazer-bachi -
I have been captured by the amount of honesty, integrity, and passion with which this book was written. I can say easily that this was one of those books that moved me tremendously, till the last line of the last page.
The language was relaxed, and tight at the same time, giving the illusion of gliding while reading. It is a rare gift that few writers have.
The medical terminology was simplified in a smart way that would be easy to understand from the side of the layman, and yet far from being tedious to the experienced health care professional.
I can only say that these mini memoirs are a true treasure for any wanna-be physician (and surgeon in particular).
Remarkably relevant 40 years later - Mark Mac - SC USA
As a background for this review, I am a General Surgeon and have been in private practice for the past 23 years. This book is well written, and describes the trials of a young surgeon in training. Even though some of the treatments for the surgical diseases described in The Making of a Surgeon have changed since this was written over 40 years ago, the personal struggles encountered during surgical training, as well as after training, have not. Dr Nolen's book is about the forming of a surgical conscience, and should be read by all surgeons, especially those in training.

An excellent book! My father introduced me to this work, as he knew William Nolen personally, and in fact was a character in the book, Jack Lesperance. Our real last name is Peterson, but it was a pleasure to get some insight into my father's residency at Bellevue Hospital in NYC.
